This high-interest, low-vocabulary novella is intended for adult basic education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) readers. A retired police detective tells a story from his family's history. On a cold winter morning in 1873, a crowd gathers on the shore of a Nova Scotia fishing village. A stormy sea has thrown a ship onto the rocks. The villagers work bravely to save the ship's crew. But many die. When young Will Murdoch and the local priest examine the bodies, they discover gold and diamonds. They suspect that the shipwreck was not responsible for all of the deaths. With the priest's help, Will- who grows up to be a famous detective- solves his first mystery.

Well, if you don't know what 'Good Reads' means then you should be aware that this is a very short read. It does actually say that somewhere but I didn't look it up and was surprised when I finished the story very quickly. Now, for the story...as usual Maureen Jennings writes superbly. I really enjoyed this short story but wish it could have been a tad longer. I like the way she moved from the 1890's into 2011. It took me a bit to realize that Bill Murdoch was not William Murdoch and that his wife's name was Julie not Julia. Tricked me! So, Bill has just lost his wife and wants to reconnect with his daughter, Wendy. I won't go into much more detail so I won't spoil it for you but it's worth the time and money you spend on it (oh, it's not expensive).

Unusual story. A good quick read.
I loved Murdoch on Netflix and decided to read the authors original stories. Really enjoyable !
Story gives the background of Murdoch, but stops short of tying into current life of the detective. I anticipated a longer story line.
Easy to read but story was less than interesting.
Super easy read! If you like the Murdoch Mystery Series, then you'll enjoy this quick read into of an episode of Murdoch's childhood. Insightful but not a full length movie thriller type.
loved this little book...it gave a very thoughtful insight into how Wm. Murdoch got started as a detective...great little book. could have been a bit longer tho'...
Rather simplistic writing. The language is almost childlike. Worth reading but not sensational. I read it wondering if I'd like to read the Murdock books. Liked the show but noticed the same childlike prose in the shows. In fact the character of Murdock is wooden, his language stiff. The Scottish police inspector had much more life, as did the female lead and the constables.
